The 2015 Long-Wander Has Begun . . .

The Wonder Egg's barn is empty as we pass out of the gate to begin our long summer wander.  Where will Oscar go this year?

Keep an eye on the blog to find out!

As boring and tedious a trip along I-10 can be, it does hold some treasures.  One of our favorite layovers is Fairview State Park, in Madisonville, LA.  Oscar likes the spooky trees, though he's glad the scary Halloween goblins aren't out this time.

This year we are members of Harvest Hosts, which has hosts throughout the US who allow RVrs to stay for free and "boondock" on their property which can be farms, wineries or
agri-tourism sites.  The settings are very unique and peaceful.  Check them out at         www.HarvestHosts.com

We stayed at Golden Acres Farm, near Monticello, FL for an evening and were guarded by an army of free range chickens.  Here are some on duty keeping watch over the Wonder Egg.

Golden Acres raises Tennessee fainting goats, lambs and guinea hens, who Oscar says make the most awful racket!

These kids and Oscar were best friends for the afternoon.

We put in an order for an early wake-up call, and Mr Rooster came strutting around the trailer at the crack of dawn tooting' his horn, as it were.

On our way, with fond memories and anticipation of future unique camping experiences with Harvests Hosts.

The journey continues . . .

Various Wanderings - Where in the world has Oscar been?

Oscar recently scolded me and said I had been neglecting our blog so that his "fans" would know what he was up to in his travels.  When I told him that the world did not revolve around him, he got all bent out of shape.  Sooooooo, here's a look at some of where Oscar has been . . .

The Quadalupe River Rats Rally (GRRR)

A great Casita rally in the heart of Texas that was kind enough to let these two Olivers join!

Here's a look at our Egg neighbors at GRRR

It seems that no year is complete without returning to the factory for some cool upgrades.

Finding pleasant campgrounds along the way to Hohenwald, TN is half the fun of getting there.

Cruising slowly down the Natchez Trace is proven to lower the blood pressure.

The Wonder Egg received TLC at the factory and got a dandy double step added.  The first double step in the Ollie fleet . . . Wooohoooo!!!

Oscar always supervised camp set-up so it met his specifications.  (Picky little dog)

The setting sun is a sight that warms the heart . . . even though this photo at Poche's Fish Camp was taken in 30 degree weather.  HA!

Halloween at Fairview State Park
Oscar didn't think this guy was his new best friend

Oscar has absolutely no sense of humor.  I asked him to pose for this picture he and kept muttering "Sure Pete. YOU sit next to this sign and risk your life for a stupid photo."
Looking closely at the sign it reads
WARNING
BEWARE OF
POISONOUS SNAKES

Rally near Big Bend NP

As most of the nation was caught in the maw of a 'big chill', Oscar and I went southwest towards the Big Bend National Park . . . a wonderful place to hang out in the winter months. You never know what you may encounter..

On the way there, we overnighted in Marathon, TX, a quaint little town with a nice RV park that kept a fire going for those cool evenings. Marathon also boasts a world class restaurant, The Gage, where you could dine haute cuisine in the main room or sit in the lounge and enjoy a killer white buffalo burger done to perfection.
Driving south into The Bend is a surreal experience where you are transported far, far from home . . .
If you are lucky, you will round the corner and come upon a friendly tribe of Egg Campers in the back wilderness only to discover they are happy and patriotic Casita owners out enjoying life.
They kindly allowed us to settle in amongst them, even though we were in an S.O.B. trailer (some other brand) Our Oliver is sort of a Casita on steroids but we are still able to blend in pretty well don't you think?

Lots of things to do . . . driving through the Big Bend NP, we found a cool campground nestled on the bowl of an ancient volcano. The shadows on the mountain sides were just right for a nice camera shot.

Only in Terlingua, TX will you hear a violin, oboe, guitar trio delighting shoppers at the local flea market.

The ruins of old Terlingua speak of a time that was much harsher than today.

Good food and your favorite adult beverage is available at the Starlight Theater, where you can share drinking stories with Clay Henry, one of the past local mayors, who continually enjoys his favorite brew after a visit to the taxidermist.

His great-great grandaughter, eight day old Annabel, is running for mayor this year. Here she is schmoozing with a voter.

Yep, Oscar and I had a fine, fine, time this January in Lajitas TX. Eileen captured this photo just as we were talking about how much more there is to do and see. Well, there's always next year . . .

Gone Fishin'

A few months ago, Oscar and I joined some friends for fly fishing on the Lanno River. Oscar supervised as I packed the trailer and hoisted the kayak onto the truck. Here he is giving his final inspection. The small rod in my hand is a Tenkara fly fishing rod I am trying out. When extended, it reaches a full 12 ft in length.

Fishin' and friends is where it's at. We set up camp next to Johnny's vintage Shasta trailer. Oscar was amused with the raccoons in the window.

A hearty breakfast with strong coffee, biscuits and spicy chilaquillas prepares us for a day on the river.

We took our time heading through several widened out ponds on the river. Clear waters in some deep, still holes enabled us to see the fish as they made their approach.

Later that day, Oscar tested out laps and listened patiently to our "true tales" of catching the big one.

In the evening, we enjoyed a nice steak dinner under the stars. Topping the grilled steak with a generous helping of fried jalapeƱos added just the right touch.

A delicious chocolate cake rounded out the evening meal.

While Oscar couldn't have any of the spicy meal or the chocolate cake, that didn't stop him from licking his chops when I told him about it.

So Oscar tolerated another day of patiently listening to our fish tales, he occasionally snickered and muttered something like "Yea, right Pete . . . sure . . . Uh huh . . . What, no pics of the big one? Hmmmmm"

Such a sceptic
